General:
Perennial herb from a somewhat woody stem-base; stems several, clustered, ascending to erect, 30-60 cm tall, often branched above, minutely to coarsely hairy, sometimes purplish.
Leaves:
Alternate, linear to narrowly lanceolate, mostly entire, but the upper ones sometimes with a pair of sharp-pointed, linear lobes, rough-short-hairy.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a prominently bracted terminal spike, the bracts yellow, oblong, rounded, with 3 to 5 narrow lobes or rarely entire, densely short-hairy; corollas greenish, 15-30 mm long, 2-lipped, the upper lip beak-like, minutely hairy, usually exserted 1-10 mm beyond the calyx, less than 1/2 the length of the tube and 2-5 times the length of the 3-lobed lower lip; calyces hairy, 15-25 mm long, deeply 2-lobed, these primary lobes again divided into 2 triangular or linear, sharp-pointed segments 1-7 mm long; stamens 4.
Fruits:
Capsules; seeds many, the seed-coats loose, net-veined.

Habitat / Range

Dry grassy or rocky slopes and open forests in the steppe and montane zones; infrequent in SE BC; E to SW AB and S to MT, ID and NE OR.
